NY Times uses it, Techcrunch uses it, Mashable, Flickr and Ebay use it too. So does Katy Perry, Perez Hilton and Martha Stewart. They all use WordPress for their blogs and websites. Girls in Tech does too and probably many of you as well.

WordPress is today the worlds most used content management system. WordPress 3.0 has been downloaded 12.5 million times and the the hosted WordPress.com has almost 14 million bloggers! For your WordPress site you can choose among 1,200 themes and plug in more than 11,000 different plugins.

A Night on WordPressWith so many users we thought it only right to pay some attention to WordPress by creating an event around the CMS giant. On November 3rd we invite Ann Oyama, web developer and WP consultant  (and electrical engineer!), to talk to us about developing for the WordPress community. We will also get techie and dive head first into a demonstration on how to create custom WordPress websites and how to use custom taxonomies and post types. For newbies to WordPress, like myself, a taxonomy is a way of classifying data, making it easier to organize your content. Post types is another way of managing content in an organized way.

Join us for this event if you are a blogger, developer or interested in learning more about WordPress. This will be a developer-focused event, but will serve as a good, fast, introductory for you who want to learn more about the technical details  behind your blog or site.

Feel free to also send us any WordPress related questions that you would like Ann Oyama to address: info@girlsintech.net, Facebook,  Twitter @GITSF.

Hope to see you at KickLabs November 3rd! Get your tickets here: http://wp2nite.eventbrite.com/

From the WordPress Blog…

Just thought we’d update everyone on the news, (in case you didn’t know); so if you use WordPress, you can benefit from this content from the WordPress team:

WordPress for iPhone/iPad v2.6 Released
Posted September 30, 2010 by Jane Wells. Filed under Releases.

Attention Apple-gadget-owning WordPress users! Have you been using the WordPress iOS app for iPhone and iPad? Or maybe you tried it a while back and thought it wasn’t for you? Either way, the new release — v2.6 — will knock your socks off. Why? A bunch of reasons:

  • Video. Record, upload, attach, and play videos within the app. Yay for being able to catch your friends’ and co-workers’ most embarrassing shenanigans creative moments with iPhone video and publish them immediately for all the world to see on your WordPress site.
  • A total rewrite of the way local drafts are handled, to prevent the unintentional loss of your pending posts.
  • Autosave/post revisions. Bam! One of the “oh, thank goodness” features of the web app makes it into the iOS version.
  • Easier setup. Faster and easier process for adding your sites to the app.
  • Media Library. We’re gradually getting closer to the media management you’re used to in the web app.

There are also numerous bug-fixes and performance enhancements in this release, so if you haven’t been using the app lately, you should consider giving it another try. I’m personally pretty excited to start using the iPhone version more often now that there are all these fixes and new features. Especially the video upload. You know, for those creative moments that make life fun.

You can read the full 2.6 release post on the WordPress for iOS blog, and can download v2.6 from iTunes/the app store.  So – Happy mobile blogging!

Picture 8WordPress users, beginners, aficionados and nerds rejoice! WordCamp is coming to Boston this year for an exciting (probably chilly) conference uniting WordPress users from all over New England.

On January 23rd, 2010, WordCamp will convene at the gorgeous (with gorgeous views) Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge, MA. With a sprawling vista of Boston and the Charles river and housed in a major epicenter of technology development and innovation in Boston, WordCamp promises to be an exciting event with opportunities for WordPress experts and beginners alike to learn and network.

Why should our Girls in Tech members care? Well, we know many of you use WordPress, either as a web hosting platform (our GiT website is a great example!) or as a corporate or personal blogging platform, and we’re sure in many other ways as well. WordCamp will give those WordPress users an opportunity to learn from other experts, get new ideas, hear about best practices and develop new techniques.

Not only do we hope you’ll all join us for WordCamp as attendees, WordCamp is also still looking for speakers and they want to make sure women get involved. To learn more about tracks and speaking opportunities and to submit your ideas, click here.

We hope our New England Girls in Tech members and friends will join us for what is sure to be a fantastic event. To register and to get more information, visit the WordCamp Boston website, and we’ll see you there!
