US M-Commerce Sales to Grow 91% to $6.7 Billion in 2011

Mobile commerce is still small compared to the overall ecommerce market, but m-commerce sales are on a steep upward trajectory, thanks in part to increasing adoption of smartphones and rising mobile internet usage, according to a new forecast by eMarketer.

eMarketer estimates mobile commerce sales will reach $6.7 billion this year in the US—a tiny fraction of overall retail sales, to be sure, but a 91.4% increase over 2010. Next year, sales will rise another 73.1% to $11.6 billion.

US M-Commerce Sales, 2010-2015 (billions and % change)

“Mobile commerce is growing at a fast clip—and it’s acting as an engine of overall ecommerce growth, by converting potential brick-and-mortar sales to digital sales as consumers use their smartphones while shopping in-store,” said eMarketer principal analyst Jeffrey Grau, author of a forthcoming report on mobile buying.

eMarketer’s estimates of mobile sales are based on a meta-analysis of data from research firms as well as overall trends in mobile ownership and usage. M-commerce sales include sales of physical goods as well as travel and event tickets purchased via mobile, but exclude digital downloads and usage of mobile phones as a point-of-sale payment mechanism. eMarketer’s estimates for m-commerce sales do not include purchases made from tablet devices.

eMarketer forecasts 37.5 million US consumers ages 14 and up will make at least one purchase on their mobile phone next year, up from 26.8 million this year. The vast majority of that group will be smartphone owners, at 97% in 2012. Overall, 72.8 million mobile users will research or browse items on their phone next year but not necessarily make a purchase.

US Mobile Buyers, 2010-2015

It means brick-and-mortar retailers run an ever-greater risk of becoming showrooms for Amazon.com and other online retailers—though the shift to mobile shopping can benefit them as well, Grau added.

5 Apps That Every HTC EVO Owner Should Have

November 24th, 2010

Dimple Thakkar

Anyone that is a “gadget-freak” like me knows that the HTC EVO is one of the most talked about smart phones of 2011.

Finally, a touchscreen phone I am proud to call the iPhone killer. That’s right, I said it (and I’ve waited so long for this moment too!).

The EVO comes with 7 home screens, an 8 megapixel camera, HDMI output, live video sharing with a front-facing camera, visual voicemail, a kickstand for hands-free and tabletop viewing, 4.3 inch screen, 4G speeds, and so much more.

But what really makes the user-experience that much better are the apps!

With that said, here are my top 5 favorite apps for the HTC EVO.

1. Tasker

This app automates your entire phone! Here are some things you can do: launch a music application when you plug in your headphones, send an automated text to someone when you’re 15 minutes away from picking them up, or set a schedule to disable certain features on your phone to conserve battery power at night.

For more info:
http://tasker.dinglisch.net

2. CamCard

For those of you who do a lot of IRL networking, this app is for you! Whenever someone gives you a business card, simply take a photograph of it with CamCard. The app scans and detects the information on the card and adds it to your phone’s address book.

For more info:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-intsig-bizcardreader-ptBx.aspx

3. Vlingo

For a safer and less distracting driving experience, use Vlingo. Use voice commands to operate your phone. Compose text messages and emails. Use Vlingo to read incoming messages (email and SMS) while driving or get directions while keeping your hands on the wheel.

For more info:
http://www.vlingo.com

4. Lookout

People often forget that a smart phone’s operating system needs anti-virus and security just like our PCs do. Use this app to stop viruses, malware, and spyware. The Lookout app also provides a backup solution so all of your data can be safe in the cloud. And finally, Lookout will help you find your phone when stolen or misplaced by pinpointing it on a Google Map. You can activate a loud alarm to locate your phone when it’s nearby…even if it is in silent mode.

For more info:
http://www.mylookout.com/m/android

5. Caller ID Faker

For us Girls in Tech that just wanna have fun, Caller ID Faker is a must-have app. Use this app to make crank calls from any phone number, change your voice, and record the call so you can proudly review your work and share it with your friends.

For more info:
http://calleridfaker.com

6. AND A BONUS FOR YOU SUPER GEEKS!!!

This isn’t an app, but I thought I’d mention this item on Amazon.com for serious EVO users that may want TWO extra longer life batteries and a wall travel dock + USB charger on the cheap! Never plug your phone in to charge again.

From the WordPress Blog…

Just thought we’d update everyone on the news, (in case you didn’t know); so if you use WordPress, you can benefit from this content from the WordPress team:

WordPress for iPhone/iPad v2.6 Released
Posted September 30, 2010 by Jane Wells. Filed under Releases.

Attention Apple-gadget-owning WordPress users! Have you been using the WordPress iOS app for iPhone and iPad? Or maybe you tried it a while back and thought it wasn’t for you? Either way, the new release — v2.6 — will knock your socks off. Why? A bunch of reasons:

  • Video. Record, upload, attach, and play videos within the app. Yay for being able to catch your friends’ and co-workers’ most embarrassing shenanigans creative moments with iPhone video and publish them immediately for all the world to see on your WordPress site.
  • A total rewrite of the way local drafts are handled, to prevent the unintentional loss of your pending posts.
  • Autosave/post revisions. Bam! One of the “oh, thank goodness” features of the web app makes it into the iOS version.
  • Easier setup. Faster and easier process for adding your sites to the app.
  • Media Library. We’re gradually getting closer to the media management you’re used to in the web app.

There are also numerous bug-fixes and performance enhancements in this release, so if you haven’t been using the app lately, you should consider giving it another try. I’m personally pretty excited to start using the iPhone version more often now that there are all these fixes and new features. Especially the video upload. You know, for those creative moments that make life fun.

You can read the full 2.6 release post on the WordPress for iOS blog, and can download v2.6 from iTunes/the app store.  So – Happy mobile blogging!

Building Native Mobile Apps Using Open Source (Day 2:OSCON)

July 20th, 2010

Ivo Lukas

Kevin Whinnery is an engineer and platform evangelist for Appcelerator. In addition to his contributions to open source and Appcelerator projects, Kevin is also the developer and maintainer of a Ruby on Rails student information system in use by several elementary schools in his home town of Saint Paul, Minnesota. A frequent speaker, blogger, and writer on technical and business topics, Kevin has appeared in multiple print and online publications.

HTML, CSS and JavaScript are quickly becoming the development languages of choice for creating native mobile applications. By using the open source Titanium platform, web developers can create apps for iPhone, Android and Blackberry using a single code base. One of the must attend session this week at OSCON

PROD_tit_platform2

Tell us more about Appcelerator. What’s unique about your technology?

Appcelerator is an open source software company based in Mountain View, CA.  Our primary product is Titanium, which allows you to build native applications for desktop and mobile devices using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.  I’m here at OSCON to present on Titanium Mobile for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry

How’s it different using open source in building your mobile apps?

It’s important when building an application to have unfettered access to the framework you are using for those cases when you need to know how specific functions work, or need to extend the platform yourself.  Open source empowers developers to do just that.  In the case of Titanium specifically, we also think it’s more productive to use our framework than the tools of multiple different platform vendors directly.

How is mobile different compares to a decade ago? Where do you think it will go in the next decade to come?

Mobile devices today are significantly more capable than ever, becoming essentially mobile computers.  Also, mobile technology is already ubiquitous, and will be more so in the years to come, with developing markets getting access to mobile technology far in advance of other technologies.  I think today we have better devices and technology than ever before, and in the future we will have this technology in the hands of nearly everyone on the planet.  This presents a great opportunity to develop cool software that users all over the globe can leverage from wherever they are.

Which sessions are you most excited about?

I’m really excited to learn more about the Scala programming language.

How’s your session today?

The session went well – we had to take a few minutes to get everyone set up, but we had over 100 people attend and as a result got lots of folks up and running with Titanium.

What would be a single take away for the attendees that you want them to gain from your session?

The mobile web is a great tool, and is progressing fast.  But when you need to go native, Titanium is a great (free and open source) option for developing cross-platform apps that still leverage native UI and platform capabilities that make them indistinguishable from their full native counterparts.  And you get to use JavaScript, which is awesome!

Is this your first time being part of Oscon? If not, then how’s it different from last year?

Yes, this is my first time, but certainly not the last, I had a great experience.

What’s current technology that you couldn’t live without?

If someone took my MacBook Pro away I’d probably cry.

To learn more about the product go to http://appcelerator.com And be sure to follow @kevinwhinnery

Android for Java developers- Mobile technology(Day 1: OSCON)

July 20th, 2010
All Chapters, Portland

Ivo Lukas

Had a brief discussion with Marko to learn more about open source and android for Java developers at OSCON yesterday.

Android for Java Developers is an action-packed, hands-on presentation that takes you through the anatomy of an Android application. The sample application includes most major Android building blocks (Activities, Intents, Services, Broadcast Receivers, Content Providers) to illustrate the philosophy of Android application development. It assumes basic Java knowledge.

Tell me more about Marko and your company, Marakana

Marko is creator of Marakana Android Training series. He has taught Android to over 1,000 developers at companies such as Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Qualcomm, Ericsson Canada, Cisco, Sharp, Texas Instruments, DoD and many others. Marko is a co-founder of San Francisco Android Users Group and regularly teaches Android Bootcamp at Marakana.

Marko founded Marakana in 2001 to help underprivileged youth, minorities, and inner-city kids learn web technologies and get ahead in life. So Marakana emerged with goal of helping people get better at what they do professionally, focused on open source software training.

Marakana founded and continue to run a few user groups such The San Francisco Java User Group, The San Francisco Agile User Group and The San Francisco Android User Group. It’s a community organized user groups.

How’s your session today?

I’ve taught Android class last year at San jose and only 10 people attended. Today we’ve had over 120! So much love in Portland. So great!!

What can we expect from your session?  Any take away for the attendees?

If you know java, then android is pretty straight forward. Learn it and use it. Mobile is where the action now. We are in the early stage but there is so much opportunity.

Open source is ubiquitous. It’s been the same since back then; but how the technology is being applied constantly changing. Also leverage our video tutorials under community; it is such a great resources http://marakana.com/forums/android/general/ and http://marakana.com/forums/android/examples/

Which sessions/keynote speakers you are most interested in?

I’m planning to see some tomorrow and also to relax! Looking forward to seeing some of the keynote speakers. Follow Marko @marakana or go to http://marakana.com/ to learn more

Waze Social GPS App. is Calling all Ladies, and Giving Away an Ipad!!

June 9th, 2010

Laurel Kaufman

As social media takes over the world, a new application called Waze (http://www.waze.com) is the first social mobile application that enables drivers to build and use real-time road intelligence.

Waze constantly-updates its road maps, alerts on traffic and accidents, provides users with the fastest route to get to their destination, and is also driven (pun intended) by user generated reports and updates .  (Who doesn’t need that in LA!)

And the best part? Because the map and all of its content is driver-generated, waze is completely FREE for users.

Waze is an amazing application but the problem is that a majority of users are all boys! So Waze finally decided to take action: CALLING ALL LADIES!

If you’re a girl gadget geek who loves getting involved in trendsetting technology projects, then Waze wants you. Waze is looking for ladies to become wazers and to start contributing to the driving communities in their areas.

And…one lucky Wazerette will win an iPad on June 17!

How to make yourself eligible to win the iPad:

1- Be a woman. We don’t suggest you do this especially for the contest, if you’re not one already:

2- Retweet this message on Twitter (feel free to translate, outside of English-speaking countries):   make sure to mention @waze

3- Download waze, if you haven’t already. Make sure to register your email address in the registration process, or in yours settings, so we’ll be able to contact you, should you be the lucky winner! http://www.waze.com/download/

4- Post one ‘chit chat’ on the waze map with this message (must be in English): Girlpower!*

Simple as that. On June 17, a lucky Wazerette will win an Ipad…let’s make sure that it’s a Girl In Tech!!!

http://www.waze.com

*to send a ‘chit chat’, click the ‘report’ button, click the purple and blue ‘chit chat’ icon, type your message, and click send.

A Look @loic

@loic

9am EST yesterday morning began the launch of Loic Le Meur’s SeesmicLook, a radically innovative and intuitive app that curates Twitter content and introduces it to the mainstream population – aka those who don’t have a Twitter account, don’t know what Twitter is, or don’t really find the appeal in microblogging.

If you’re unfamiliar with @loic and his marvels, Seesmic has created a number of platforms that help people share information regardless of where they are: via desktop, web-based, mobile, and recently e-mail, SMS and chat. These platforms have been downloaded 3.5 million times since the company’s launch in 2007. And because one of Seesmic’s largest goals is to create a streamlined experience for Twitter users, devoted tweeters are, well, their main users.  Read the rest of this entry »

What Can’t the Jesus-Phone Do?

May 20th, 2009

Well, plenty…

kztolzsrnnhre489zlruitito1_250I was hanging out with a friend last night who jailbroke her iPhone. The simple reason she gave for doing so was that it was her phone, she bought it, and she should be able to do whatever she wants on the phone. She then showed me all the amazing applications you could have with a jailbroken phone. She also reminded me that you have access to purchase apps from the App store as well. I thought to myself, why don’t more people jailbreak their phone?

Media Post writes, “For users who really want to use disfavored apps, the only way around Apple’s bans is to “jailbreak” their phones. Problem is, doing so potentially violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s anti-circumvention provisions”.

Last week when my application was rejected, Me So Holy, EFF, a digital rights group wrote, “As we’ve said before, Apple is legally within its rights to sell or not sell whatever they choose in their store. But the monopoly they hold on applications for the iPhone means that unless users have the right to jailbreak their phones, they’ll be blocked from enjoying the fruits of 21st century thinking — and 12th century thinking as well!”

At this point there needs to be solution. Either the DMCA makes an exemption for jailbreaking or Apple should allow all applications to be sold within their store.

Watch me on CNN here, read the rejection post here, and check out my other app, the Animalizer here.
