We wanted to highlight this great video, a panel put on by Glamour/Conde Naste and moderated by All Things D’s own Kara Swisher.

You might ask: “What is a magazine like Glamour doing moderating such a panel?” To answer this, Editor Cindi Leive answers this way:  “Nothing is more glamorous than a woman with skills to make our world run more smoothly.”  Further, she adds: “We’ve always gone where the women are!”  I see this as a good sign!

With Hilary Mason of Bitly (their chief scientist), Stacy Brown-Philpot, director of Google-owned and operated properties; Julie Larson-Green, corporate VP of program management for Windows at Microsoft; Kati London, director of product for Zynga –  please enjoy as they talk the gamut of topics, including:  Why is it that girls, disproportionately, start to lose interest in science and math by the fourth grade? -to- How do we get women and girls interested in going into computer science and engineering degrees?, as well as how to foster role models for these skills in a career.

Girls in Tech

Today’s Tech & Video Game industries, while still heavily male dominated, are seeing a growing female presence each year. In recognition of this, companies have now started assembling scholarship programs for women entering these fields. Just last year, Sony established the G.I.R.L. (Gamers In Real Life) Scholarship program, to positively impact the way females are depicted in video games and create and influence content to be appealing to women. The program also tries to raise awareness of the female gaming audience to the media in an effort to encourage the gaming industry to positively promote women throughout all facets of games, game production and into game management. Winners receive $10,000 towards tuition, as well as an internship at Sony Online Entertainment.

Other scholarships for girls include Vanguard’s Women in Technology scholarship program, Microsoft’s Graduate Women’s Scholarship program, and various scholarships from womengamers.com to name a few. There are now more technology and gaming scholarships for girls than ever before, with the number increasing each year. Interested in one of these scholarships or know other girls who might be? The Potential for Social Networking & Mapping – Impressive!

Dr. Regina Dugan, Director of DARPA

Just two months ago, DARPA, headed by Dr. Regina Dugan, conducted an interesting challenge to find ten red balloons strategically “hidden” throughout the United States. Seekers had a time frame of nine days to correctly map-out the whereabouts of those balloons. In nine hours, an MIT team had located all of the balloons—that was just with real-time social networking technologies—no augmented-reality mapping involved.

Microsoft's augmented-reality mapping at TED Talks 2010

Microsoft's augmented-reality mapping at TED Talks 2010

Two months later, social networking has new pal. At the annual TED Talks gathering, Microsoft unveiled its latest augmented-reality mapping. This technology will take social networking and seeking & find projects to a new level.

For education, all I can say is that if school districts don’t take this summer to get their teachers up to snuff with technology skills, there will be more of us teachers retiring as parents can create national and global networks of real-time information exchange (For educators: check out Natasha’s post below). Students no longer have to wait until gets dark to experience Orion or wait until their parents can take them to a famous landmark in a foreign country, with an iphone, internet, and augmented-reality mapping, they will be well on their way.

Though I have my hesitations about safety and privacy issues, the potential advantages to rescue missions, law enforcement, education and network publications could far outweigh the cons of such a technology. I just wonder if Dr. Dugan is willing to create another $40K DARPA Balloon challenge using augmented-reality mapping—maybe the nine hour search will become nine minutes!

Nevertheless, Microsoft has taken social networking to a new level, and it’s quite impressive!

Microsoft vs. Apple: The Double Standard of Expectations

Girls in Tech

I am a PC. I am happy with my Thinkpad. Yes, there are service packages that I need to install, but I look at it as par for the course. I understand the complaints others have regarding their Windows machine. I appreciate the Mac commercial (though I do have more sympathy for the PC character, since I think the Mac character is way to smug…) I am happy with my Windows machine (or I am not cool enough for a Mac).apple-pc-ads

I have an iPod Touch. I use it mostly for the apps and enjoy trying out different ones. However, I have been reluctant to download more recently. Why? Well, it seems like every time I want to try something new, I discover that I need to upgrade the software on my iPod.

This was my recent experience trying to download a new app. I needed the new iPhone/iPod software. Okay, I synced it with my computer in order to upgrade. Oh, we can’t upgrade it yet, my iTunes software needed to be upgraded. Okay – downloaded the new version of iTunes. By the way, it came with Quicktime, Bonjour, and MobileMe, that Apple thinks I will need (I uninstalled some of them last time I upgraded). Okay… (The download and install took a while.) Afterwards, I needed to reboot my computer. By the way, my previously made shortcut didn’t work anymore. Okay, I needed to make a new shortcut. Hmm, why did it take over 30 seconds to load the new iTunes? Finally, I was able to upgrade the software for the iPod. It costed $9.95! Sigh!

I was told that the $9.95 thing is not Apple’s fault – it is GAAP related. Those silly accounting rules… But the whole process for me wanting to try out a new app took FOREVER. Yes, it was a one time thing, but there were incremental upgrades that I had to do in the past. The upgrade process is not the most simple, the syncing and the dual downloading / installing. It happened more frequently that I like for a portable music player. Yet, there are no major complaints from Apple users. Why is that?

I get the sense that Apple can’t do no wrong, whereas everything Microsoft does is evil. Maybe I am not seeing the Apple complainers. Still, Apple is a huge company making money off of us. Even Google has been getting some flack after getting “too big”. Why does the public seem to have this double standards with Microsoft and Apple?
