Girls in Tech Holiday Soiree & The Winner of Girl Up Fundraising Raffle

December 3rd, 2010

The San Francisco Chapter of Girls in Tech rang in December on Wednesday night with their annual Holiday Mixer.  As always, just social fun, eats and cocktails to celebrate the great year we’ve had, and ring in the holidays!  This year, we were also throwing the bash to benefit Girl Up, one of our partners, whose work for the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls we admire so much.  We were able to raise well over $300 in donations, thanks to the generous support of those who attended and, either, bought raffle tickets or simply made a voluntary donation.  So, thank you all!

And the winners were…

Our main raffle prize – A Girl Up inspired bracelet, designed by Ivanka Trump and with all proceeds going to Girl Up – was won by:

Tamikka Johnson (pictured here, on the right)

The second prize winners won an entrance to two events of their choice in GIT San Francisco’s 2011 calendar!   Those winners were:

1.  Sheila Lustiva

2. Chris Linn

It was a great way to round off our fabulous year at Girls in Tech — With our many great events from fireside chats with Evan Williams and Brian Solis, to our first Vator.tv/Girls in Tech AMPLIFY Business Pitch Conference & Competition and socializing and making connections, like the many that were made this Wednesday night!

Big thanks to the staff at 5A5 Steakhouse, our Girl in Tech volunteers who helped organize and run the event while we were there, and…

To our prize winners — and everyone out there — who came to celebrate with us & donated to UN’s Girl Up — Thank you!

Gaming Gifts for the Holidays!

December 3rd, 2010

With the Holidays fast approaching, many of us are scrambling to pick up the perfect gifts for family, friends, and loved ones. With all of the current advances in technology and gaming, and their fast paced ever changing nature, what should you get the avid gamer in your life? Here’s my list of the Top 5 (give or take) most popular items gamers are clamoring for this Holiday Season:

5: Call of Duty: Black Ops – This latest title in the Call of Duty series is set during the Cold War era, and sold over 5.6 Million units in the first 24 hours of its release. Gamers can expect much of what they love from previous “call of duty” titles in terms of gameplay experience and controls. It’s also got some other cool additional features, like ‘Zombie Mode’, that players have been loving since it’s release. Get a copy for the gamer in your life quickly, as this game has had a hard time staying on the shelves for long in most stores.

4: GameFly Subscription – Not sure what games to get the gamer in your life this season or simply can’t afford to give them the long list of games they desire? A Subscription to GameFly might be the answer. Like Netflix, but for gamers, you can pick the games you’d like to play, they send them to you, and when you’re finished, you send them back in the provided envelope and they send you the next game in your queue. It’s an excellent way to play many games without having to shell out the sometimes-as-high-as-$60 pricetag on some games today.

3: WoW:Cataclysm – For the online gamer in your life, (particularly the World of Warcraft fanatic),  this long awaited expansion to the World of Warcraft series will be released early December. With new stories, character classes, abilities, dungeons, battlegrounds, there’s plenty of new features packed in for new and seasoned players alike.

2: Gift Cards – With the increase of online content available to gaming consoles today, gift cards are a great option for the gamer in your life. Many stores today carry Xbox 360 Point Cards, Xbox live subscriptions, Playstation Network gift cards, Wii Point cards, or iTunes App store gift cards for buying games on the iPhone. Whatever the console of choice for your gamer, or your budget, you’ve got lots of options!

1: Microsoft Kinect / Sony Move – There’s no doubt that one of the hottest, if not the hottest video game accessory this season is the Microsoft Kinect (for the Xbox 360), and the Sony Move (for the PS3). In the case of the Sony Move, it’s a new form of controller for using your body and movements to control games, much like the Wiimote for the Wii. The Microsoft Kinect on the other hand takes things up a notch, using a special camera and sensor for the Xbox, it makes your entire body the controller, without the need to hold anything in your hands. With both of these new accessories, their respective consoles have now brought wii-like experiences to players everywhere.

Good luck with your holiday shopping and Happy Holidays!

Swarovski crystals and balanced ternary notation

December 30th, 2009

Asli Bilgin

Asli Bilgin, a great heart and community leader in New York City (via Microsoft) dined via candlelight in a charming French Restaurant in the heart of Gramercy, Park Avenue, NYC. Alissa Emerson trudged through the snow with a 5 inch by 5 inch Tiffany-blue plastic box neatly packed in her editfashion.com-approved hand bag, joined by Michael, her husband, to sit among friends at the restaurant’s inner balcony.

There, Alissa introduced an interesting gift idea that is simple and elegant – yet can be distilled into binary. Asli was treated to a projected slide show of pictures and a usb drive made of Philips metal embossed by Swarovski crystals so that as she jet-sets to Dubai to educate global leaders on new Microsoft technology – her friends go with her – a fun way to bring back old traditions like watching slides with one another. The best wishes for her in her travels.

Group Theory in the Bedroom

Speaking of binary, and since Asli also loves math, on vacation, I happened across a superb explanation for binary, by Brian Hayes in his collection Group Theory in the Bedroom. On page 180, he writes:

The most important numerals are all constructed according to a place-value system. In decimal notation, the numeral 19 is shorthand for the expression:

( 1 x 101 ) + ( 9 x 100 )

Or, as you might recite in a primary-school classroom, “one ten and nine ones.” Likewise, the binary numeral 10011 is understood to mean:

( 1 x 24 ) + ( 0 x 23 ) + ( 0 x 22 ) + ( 1 x 21 ) + ( 1 x 20 )

which adds up to the same value. The ternary version of the same number is written 201, which expands as follows:

( 2 x 32 ) + ( 0 x 31 ) + ( 1 x 30 )

In this case we have two 9s, no 3s, and one 1.

The general formula for a numeral in any place-value notation goes something like this:

d3 r3 +d2 r2 +d1 r1 +d0 r0 …

Here r is the base, or radix, and the coefficients d i are the digits of the number.

Hint: Brian is a balanced ternary fan, which is very pretty and arguably more efficient than binary, and on which he continues to write on page 189:

the digits of a balanced-ternary numeral are coefficients of powers of 3, but instead of coming from the set {0 1 2}, the digits are -1, 0, and 1 (sic)

The decimal number 19 is written 1101 in balanced ternary, and this numeral is interpreted as follows:

( 1 x 33 ) – ( 1 x 32 ) + ( 0 x 31 ) + ( 1 x 30 )
