If you ever planted super berries on Farmville for a quick profit or downloaded a Katy Perry song via Tap Tap Revenge on your mobile device, you experienced the convergence of social media, mobile gaming, virtual goods, and an innovative business model.

Every day, a growing number of people around the globe connect to social media for networking and entertainment, and many of them are doing so on their mobile devices.  Entrepreneurs, business leaders and practitioners are coming up with new and original ways to capitalize on this growing trend and to make money through social media.

Learn how industry leaders in online marketing, digital media and mobile gaming are creating and executing these business strategies at Socialize: Monetizing Social Media, a two-day conference presented by Mediabistro, SocialTimes & AllFacebook. Diverse perspectives will be represented at discussions focused on four core themes:

  • Gamify. Social games keep getting hotter: the virtual goods market will surpass $2 billion in 2011
  • Mobilize. The social web has gone mobile: lessons for social sharing, search, browsing, and networking
  • Optimize. Learn how to effectively track and measure social media campaigns
  • Monetize. At the root of all these topics, uncover key revenue drivers: content, apps, and more

The conference will be held from Thursday, March 31 to Friday, April 1, 2011 at The New Yorker Hotel in New York City.

Gaming Gifts for the Holidays!

December 3rd, 2010
All Chapters, Girls In Tech

With the Holidays fast approaching, many of us are scrambling to pick up the perfect gifts for family, friends, and loved ones. With all of the current advances in technology and gaming, and their fast paced ever changing nature, what should you get the avid gamer in your life? Here’s my list of the Top 5 (give or take) most popular items gamers are clamoring for this Holiday Season:

5: Call of Duty: Black Ops – This latest title in the Call of Duty series is set during the Cold War era, and sold over 5.6 Million units in the first 24 hours of its release. Gamers can expect much of what they love from previous “call of duty” titles in terms of gameplay experience and controls. It’s also got some other cool additional features, like ‘Zombie Mode’, that players have been loving since it’s release. Get a copy for the gamer in your life quickly, as this game has had a hard time staying on the shelves for long in most stores.

4: GameFly Subscription – Not sure what games to get the gamer in your life this season or simply can’t afford to give them the long list of games they desire? A Subscription to GameFly might be the answer. Like Netflix, but for gamers, you can pick the games you’d like to play, they send them to you, and when you’re finished, you send them back in the provided envelope and they send you the next game in your queue. It’s an excellent way to play many games without having to shell out the sometimes-as-high-as-$60 pricetag on some games today.

3: WoW:Cataclysm – For the online gamer in your life, (particularly the World of Warcraft fanatic),  this long awaited expansion to the World of Warcraft series will be released early December. With new stories, character classes, abilities, dungeons, battlegrounds, there’s plenty of new features packed in for new and seasoned players alike.

2: Gift Cards – With the increase of online content available to gaming consoles today, gift cards are a great option for the gamer in your life. Many stores today carry Xbox 360 Point Cards, Xbox live subscriptions, Playstation Network gift cards, Wii Point cards, or iTunes App store gift cards for buying games on the iPhone. Whatever the console of choice for your gamer, or your budget, you’ve got lots of options!

1: Microsoft Kinect / Sony Move – There’s no doubt that one of the hottest, if not the hottest video game accessory this season is the Microsoft Kinect (for the Xbox 360), and the Sony Move (for the PS3). In the case of the Sony Move, it’s a new form of controller for using your body and movements to control games, much like the Wiimote for the Wii. The Microsoft Kinect on the other hand takes things up a notch, using a special camera and sensor for the Xbox, it makes your entire body the controller, without the need to hold anything in your hands. With both of these new accessories, their respective consoles have now brought wii-like experiences to players everywhere.

Good luck with your holiday shopping and Happy Holidays!

Today’s Tech & Video Game industries, while still heavily male dominated, are seeing a growing female presence each year. In recognition of this, companies have now started assembling scholarship programs for women entering these fields. Just last year, Sony established the G.I.R.L. (Gamers In Real Life) Scholarship program, to positively impact the way females are depicted in video games and create and influence content to be appealing to women. The program also tries to raise awareness of the female gaming audience to the media in an effort to encourage the gaming industry to positively promote women throughout all facets of games, game production and into game management. Winners receive $10,000 towards tuition, as well as an internship at Sony Online Entertainment.

Other scholarships for girls include Vanguard’s Women in Technology scholarship program, Microsoft’s Graduate Women’s Scholarship program, and various scholarships from womengamers.com to name a few. There are now more technology and gaming scholarships for girls than ever before, with the number increasing each year. Interested in one of these scholarships or know other girls who might be? Check out the links provided below for these scholarships and others.

Recycle your gadgets for those in need…

August 25th, 2010

Alexandra Mokh

Are you one of the many out there who has some old electronics lying around? Perhaps an old gaming system you never use, an old flip phone covered in gems, or dare I say it, *gasp* an old beige desktop PC? For many households, these items become “outdated” rather quickly, and often stick around somewhere gathering dust, never to be used again. Today, with the help of many companies, you can recycle and donate your old gadgets. Some of these companies will clean up and resell the items, taking 100% of the profits and putting them into various charities, while others will actually refurbish the devices if possible, putting them in the hands of those in need, such as schools with little-to-no technology programs or budgets, to third world communities who really need the technology but can’t afford it.

So where can you go to donate your used tech toys? There are many resources, such as eBay’s Rethink Initiative / eBay Giving Works, which acts as a directory of resources for you to donate or recycle your gear. Others include Reconnect, a collaboration between Dell and Goodwill, that accepts items in any condition, and is as simple as dropping the items off to a local participating goodwill location. Check out the links at the bottom of this article for even more places to choose from.

Recycling or donating your gadgets is a great way to help others in need, and maybe even help clean up some more space around the house. Of course, for those wondering, there are often tax benefits and write-off’s as well if needed. Don’t forget, if donating pc’s, laptop’s, or cell phones, to be sure to delete and remove all personal or sensitive data from your device’s as well.

The next time you think to toss out that old ipod or personal dvd player, make sure to recycle or donate. You’ll save landfill space, and perhaps help someone less fortunate who could really use it.

Gaming and Movies

July 7th, 2010

If you’re a gamer like myself, you’ve probably heard of the electronic entertainment expo, or E3. It’s one of the biggest conventions used to preview up-and-coming and recently released video games, accessories, attire, and much much more. I’ve had the opportunity to check out this convention for the past several years, and would like to share some of my thoughts on the highlights and changes that have occurred during this time.

After walking the halls of the convention for hours and hours, what really stood out is how much the entertainment industry has merged with the video game industry. Just 5-10 years ago Hollywood was on top of the world and gamers were more of an underground or basement crowd existing completely independently of each other. Now with the recessive economy, Hollywood is losing revenue while the gaming industry is maintaining it’s numbers. Once a power house, the movie market has now switched positions with the gaming industry. There’s a boost in game development and its takers, and entertainment is begging for a chance to play a part in anything gaming.

Take for example the highlight of the show: Nintendo’s 3DS. Nintendo truly outdid themselves with this new intriguing handheld console. As the name implies, the new features include two cameras on the back which allow for taking 3D pictures, and the ability to play games in 3D. However after the 30 minute wait to get a hands-on look at this new device, the majority of uses I saw were not gaming related, but entertainment. During the preview it wasn’t so much the games, but the movies that were highly stressed. “You can watch regular movies in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS!”, I was told. Now as amazing as I think it is to be able to watch movies on a game console, I started to wonder how it became as much or more about movies as gaming.

Looking around the halls there is more integration of entertainment and gaming than ever before. Most popular movies today are being turned into video games, as well as the other way around. There have been rumors about the online game World of Warcraft being turned into a movie. A game that is being played by a whopping 12 million people. Such a following would be a sure box office success.

This strange evolution from people watching movies or playing video games independently to a world where a movie or a game enhances the overall experience is amazing. In a short time these two very different industries found a way to combine their strengths and bring two audiences into the same circle. I believe this is a positive turn of events for gamers everywhere and I hope this trend continues, and the these two communities continue to grow in unison.

G.I.R.L. Scholarship Program by Sony Online Has $10,000 Local Valley Winner!

June 20th, 2010
All Chapters, Silicon Valley

Christine Oneto

Girls in Tech would like to congratulate the winner and Sony Online Entertainment for their G.I.R.L. Scholarship program for instilling encouragement for more women to get into the tech/gaming industry. They recently announced: Sylvia Liu of Milpitas, California, has been granted their 3rd annual $10,000 scholarship!

Since its inception, the scholarship program has been successful in encouraging students to pursue career paths in the creative and applied arts, ultimately resulting in the development of video games that are more enticing for women to play. Liu is an entertainment design student at Art Center College in Pasadena, California.  She has not only been awarded the $10,000  to be applied toward her tuition, but also the chance to take on a paid internship for up to 10 weeks at Sony Online Entertainment’s San Diego headquarters.  (Talk about hands-on experience!)

Says Liu, “I worked hard on my submission and am very proud of what I accomplished for this competition. This opportunity will help me a long way in my career so I can’t wait to get started!”  She was one of over 100 applicants who entered to win the scholarship and were asked to submit artwork for characters designed as if they would be included in some of the company’s new game titles.   An essay pertaining to their view of women in the gaming industry was also part of their submittals.  One of the former scholarship winners actually still works for Sony Online, following her internship at their Seattle office!  Thus, Sony Online has been staying involved in nurturing women in the tech field in a big way.  Kudos to all!

Xbox presents: Kinect and Cirque Du Soleil

June 17th, 2010

This year’s E3 highlight for me came during the Xbox introduction of it’s newest geek’s wet dream, Kinect.  Xbox unveiled its newest gaming console with the help of  Cirque du Soleil.  As guest entered the stadium, they were asked to don white jerseys with futuristic shoulder pads.  I thought, “uh oh, don’t drink the kool aid”.  The show utilized these jerseys which had LED lights placed in the shoulder pads to light the crowd in strategic patterns and colors.  It was an interactive, visually stimulating masterpiece.  The Cirque show itself was pseudo-jungle themed with animatronic elephants and people roasting giant marshmallows over faux flames.  And the center of it all, a large TV screen hovering above the stadium with the quintessential Xbox family.  Floating from ceiling to floor, the family demonstrated the new game offerings live with surround sound and visuals.  After the show, we headed to the VIP lounge where we were invited to try Kinect.  We remotelessly drove cars, danced our *sses off and downward dogged it.  As a techie but non-gamer, I have to say that the Kinect offerings are so comprehensive that it appeals to everyone, so much so that I pre-ordered a Kinect which doesn’t arrive on the shelved until November 3, 2010.  If you haven’t checked it out make sure you do at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/kinect/default.htm Xbox really has something for every gender, age and interest.

Thoughts from a girl in a gaming world…

May 19th, 2010
All Chapters, All Chapters

Alexandra Mokh

I have always had a passion for video games. Since I was a child, I played them whether I was with friends or alone. I loved games so much that I started an online social network for female gamers. Yet despite all that, when I’m faced with the question of “what do you do?” I seem to get the same premature response every time: “Really? Girls play video games?!?”

Now I know what you’re thinking: “This isn’t the 18th century anymore, people don’t really still think that, do they?” Well… the good news is… they don’t.

As much as men (and the occasional woman) like to crack jokes about females not being into technology, or gaming, I’m happy to say that these people are now few and far between. This is a time of change, and the ones leading the way are the ones who have familiarized themselves with all things tech around them. Women who could barely enter the menu options on their cell phones just five years ago are now adding friends and family to their Facebook App on their smartphones. Forget sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper in the mornings, moms today use the Kindle to stay in touch with the news before the paper can even reach the doorstep. Young girls are asking for the upcoming iPhone 4G for their birthdays before the boys on their block knew there was a new iphone on the way.

The transition happened so fast one could barely see it coming. And the gaming industry is no different. Today, whether you game, work, or know someone that does, it’s hard to walk through a mall and not be surrounded by people and media of video games. This is especially true for women. More women play video games today than they have ever in the history of the industry. In fact, the numbers are split almost 50/50.  With so many platforms, genre’s and choices available today, it’s no wonder we’re now seeing those kinds of numbers.
Whether you’re a friendly Solitaire player, or a competitive player at parties or with friends, or an avid game developer, women are flooding the halls with gaming influence. And I, for one, am raising my glass to the prospect of this growth continuing.
