Girls in Tech CrowdConf2011 Ticket Giveaway!

Girls in Tech are giving away 3 tickets to the World’s Largest Crowdsourcing Conference, CrowdConf2011. How would you apply the crowdsourcing principles in a unique way?

Jeff Howe of Wired Magazine first coined the term crowdsourcing. Howe explains that because technological advances have allowed for cheap consumer electronics, the gap between professionals and amateurs has been diminished. Companies are then able to take advantage of the talent of the public, and Howe states that “It’s not outsourcing; it’s crowdsourcing.” A less commercial approach was introduced by Henk van Ess in September 2010: “Crowdsourcing is channelling the experts’ desire to solve a problem and then freely sharing the answer with everyone”. More >>>

Girls in Tech would like to offer 3 tickets to our members. To be considered, simply post how you would use crowdsourcing (crowdfunding, crowdwisdom, crowdvoting, or crowdcreation) for your business or any other business out there. It doesn’t have to be a a large submission, simply comment to this post with a few lines of how you would apply the crowdsourcing principles in a unique way. Get creative, think of how the fashion world and television has utilized its concepts, non profits (like Kiva) and how crowdsourcing could possibly grow an organization like Girls in Tech… you can post as many ideas as you’d like. If you do, please post each idea in a separate comment. Post away!

We are gearing up for the upcoming Girls in Tech – Facebook 24 hour hackathon this weekend. Facebook created a wiki (http://bit.ly/9pV2QQ) where people could post their ideas ahead of time and start forming mini teams based on skills and the flow of ideas. Just by looking at the wiki and the level of attendees, I know it will be a phenomenal event!

Add to that fantastic panelists like Jocelyn Goldfein (Dir. Eng at Facebook), Sandy Jen (Founder Meebo), Jennifer Pahlka (Founder Code for America), Catherine Herdlick (Game Producer at Electronic Arts), and you know its an event you don’t want to miss.

See what Tech Daily had to say about the event: http://bit.ly/bVqO23

Come join us tomorrow by registering at http://facebookdevgarage-git.eventbrite.com/

Mountain View based start-up, Bizzy, is a new way for local businesses to share deals, events, tips and news with their customers.

Today they announced “What’s Happening” in San Francisco which provides us (consumers) with a listing of great offers, events and promotions from businesses in their city at any given time – all in one place.

On Bizzy, you create a customized list of your favorite local businesses and once you’re connected, your Bizzy homepage acts as a feed of updates, highlighting special deals and events from the businesses you’ve selected. All of the feed items are shareable on Facebook, Twitter and via e-mail providing an easy way for new customers to discover local businesses by learning from their friends’ experiences or from people with similar taste.

What I love about it is the fact that my inbox isn’t being bombarded with 20% off deals and the like. When I am ready to make plans for the weekend, want to shop, or whatever – I can go to Bizzy to see whats going on in San Francisco.

Wondering what to do this weekend? Take a look at “What’s Happening” in San Francisco: http://bizzy.com/happening/sf

Bizzy is also available in NYC and Dallas and I can’t wait for it to launch in Santa Cruz :-)

Girls In Tech LA Presents: The Buzz – PR & Marketing 3.0

March 31st, 2010
Events, Los Angeles
profile picture

Mollie Vandor

When it comes to today’s PR world, it’s all about the buzz. That particularly viral kind of word of mouth marketing that means big brand recognition and even bigger sales.

But, how do you build that buzz? How do you keep it going? How do you transition a PR campaign from traditional media to new media? And, how do you convince clients that all this tweeting and texting and typing is totally worth it? These are just a few of the topics we’ll be covering at our latest Girls in Tech LA panel — The Buzz: PR & Marketing 3.0.

The panel kicks off at 7, followed by cocktails and plenty of time to enjoy them. There will also be a full bar menu. And, we’re very excited to be hosting it at Hollywood hot spot H.Wood.

According to Citysearch, “this small, plush hideout has a loungey vibe with brown leather couches and low-lit vintage chandeliers. Inside the 1920s-esque bar and lounge, the see and be seen and celeb crowd plays chess on boards strewn on tables, shakes their hips on the upstairs dance floor, and snacks on upscale comfort food.”

Tickets are $10, and supplies are limited, so grab yours before we sell out.

Speakers include:

Rynda Laurel (moderator)- Rynda is currently managing International Strategy for AF83 (Paris/San Francisco), Bearstech (Paris) and Hackable:Devices (Paris). She is involved in coordinating and participating in numerous events and panels including: French by South West, Twestival, Social Media Club, TedxSoma, Musi2K, Digital LA, Girls In Tech and FAIRfund. She also is developing a socially conscious marketing and consulting agency which is a manifestation of her deep-seated devotion to the environment and sustainability.

Nicole Jordan – one of the premier PR/Marketing names in the LA area, she has worked as a social media expert on the Rubicon Project and as director of PR and Communications for Clearstone Venture Partners. She has also worked with This Next, Inc., Brenthaven, Buongiorno USA, David Lynch, Edelman, and Ogilvy, just to name a few.

Heather Meeker – Director of PR & Marketing at Whrrl.

Babette Pepaj – founder/CEO of BakeSpace.com, the Web’s first food-themed social network and 2009 Webby Nominee for “Best Social Network.” She is also the founder of TECHmunch and publisher of The Daily Bite. All eyes on Mediabistro’s Spring social media events

March 24th, 2010
New York
profile picture

Kayla Zerby

Laurel Touby, the founder & cyberhostess of mediabistro.com – the largest online destination for media professionals – recently gave GIT-NY a heads up on some amazing Spring events tailored exclusively for the social media marketing diva in New York.

Two events that caught our eye were the upcoming Think Mobile event and the 3rd annual Mediabistro Circus event.

Think Mobile, which takes place April 7-8 at Comix in New York City is a conference about all things mobile as it relates to the marketing mix. What’s really cool this year is that they’ve devoted an entire day with a laser-focus on mobile apps.

Confused about which apps work best for your organization? There’s a panel for that.

No idea about what it actually takes to build a mobile app? There’s a panel for that.

As expected, the 2-day conference features an amazing mix of panel participants and moderators – from PC Magazine’s Dan Costa to Bravo TV’s Aimee Viles.

Mediabistro Circus enters its 3rd year of fabulosity on May 20 at 92Y Tribeca in New York City. Girls in Tech was delighted to hear that the focus of this year’s Circus is on “women as visionary leaders who have challenged traditional thinking at a time of great economic upheaval.”

A quick glance at the amazing day-long program (which we’re told is still being finalized) already had us giddy. (Shout-out to GIT-NYC member Lynne Johnson of the Advertising Research Foundation, who will be speaking on the Social Media Panel alongside Conde Nast Digital’s Alice McKown.)

From the changing face of online retail to strategies on how to build community into content, all eyes are sure to be on this circus.

Will we see you there?

October 12th, 2009
Omaha

Kt

Midwestern developers are all abuzz this week in anticipation of the Heartland Developers Conference, an event for building professional skills and cultivating community relationships, taking place Oct. 15-16 in Omaha. With 68 sessions and four development categories packed into two days, HDC is the place to be for software designers, developers, engineers, analysts, architects…you get the picture.

For the first time since the conference began in 2004, Girls in Tech will have a presence at the event to share our mission, experience and passion. We’re excited about networking with fellow techies, but we’re also looking forward to some high quality speakers and sessions. The first day features keynotes by Microsoft’s Scott Guthrie and Adobe’s Kevin Hoyt. The next day is no shabbier, with keynotes by Neal Ford of ThoughtWorks  and Google’s Patrick Chanezon . Session topics range from iPhone dev and jQuery to alternative database technologies and Flex.

If you’ll be attending HDC, let us know at Omaha@GirlsInTech.net and be sure to stop by our booth. If not, follow the action on Twitter with the official event hashtag #HDC09. We’ll be sure to report back with a recap of the conference and its awesome evening events soon.
