Apps For Communities Challenge Winners Celebration at Andreessen Horowitz in Silicon Valley on December 15

Adriana Gascoigne

Earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation challenged American citizens to develop software applications (apps) that deliver personalized, actionable information to people that are least likely to be online. Using hyper-local government and other public data, people developed apps that will enable Americans to benefit from broadband communications — regardless of geography, race, economic status, disability, residence on Tribal land, or degree of digital or English literacy — by providing easy access to relevant content.

This week, we’re excited to unveil the winners at a ceremony at 10 AM PST Thursday December 15 in Silicon Valley and online at http://appsforcommunities.challenge.gov/

The Apps for Communities winner celebration details are:

Date: December 15, 2011 from 10 am to 11 am
Location: Andreessen Horowitz Offices in Silicon Valley
RSVP: appchallenge@fcc.gov

At the celebration, you’ll find out our Grand Prize winner ($30,000), Second and Third Prize winners ($20k and $10k respectively), the five Runners Up prizes ($1k each), and the bonus prize winners!

Checkout all the eligible apps: http://appsforcommunities.challenge.gov/submissions

Remember to follow @communityapps on Twitter, or the Apps for Communities Facebook page for updates and news.  Hope to see you there!

Photos Are Worth A Thousand Words, Especially When “Social Mobile Dating”

October 25th, 2011

Adriana Gascoigne

It’s no secret that photos are worth a thousand words especially when it comes to online dating. There is a direct correlation between how many views, pings and pokes your profile receives based on your photo – what you’re wearing, your hairstyle, if you’re smiling or not, even the lighting and backdrop in the photo. Photo sharing and online dating are now intersecting with the help of social dating service Jazzed®. Jazzed provides an innovative way for members to express themselves and connect with interesting people through their mobile devices. Now available on iTunes, the latest release of Jazzed’s iOS mobile app contains a new feature, inspired by photo sharing apps like Instagram and Mobli, that allows users new ways of self-expression and discovering new people. With over 350,000 mobile downloads of the Jazzed app, this latest feature builds on the momentum and signals the next generation of mobile dating.

“Online dating profiles have  followed the same format for the past 15 years.” said Carlos Moreno, Director of Technology for Jazzed. “We want to break that mold and introduce something new and innovative to the dating category starting with mobile Mobile dating has to evolve to integrate social and sharing.”

Jazzed’s new mobile feature is a constantly updating gallery of images posted by members. People can search by:

  • the type of photo posted – photos of members (People) or interest-based photos (Things & Places)
  • by who posted (Everyone, Users who match your search criteria) or
  • location-based (with the Nearby filter).

View a demonstration video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN5VeojkCCw

Connections are created when members engage directly with others by liking or commenting on photos that catch their attention. Photos with the most likes and comments become popular and float to the top of the feed. Members can also share photos on Facebook or Twitter, via iOS5, and extend their Jazzed experience to their social circles. Members will also be able to tag their photos.  A photo at Coachella Music Festival can be tagged “Coachella,” “Alternative Rock,” or “Festival” so it’s easy to find and connect with like-minded singles.

A Trendy New Addition to the Crowded Social Voice Community

October 13th, 2011
All Chapters

Adriana Gascoigne

A new player has joined the hot social voice community – QWiPS. Alongside Audioboo, Fotobabble and SoundCloud this segment within the technosphere is a big trend right now that could have a significant impact on the way both consumers and bands/marketers use social media. We’ve already embraced multimedia on platforms like Facebook and Twitter through text, images and videos. But what about voice? We know how powerful voice, and even ambient sound, is — the first thing newborns hear are the sounds of the world around them and their parents’ voices. And every day we make calls and record messages for our friends and loved ones. But ultimately, it’s easier to just send that Facebook message, tweet or text. QWiPS lets you do both.

You can go ahead and send that tweet or that picture you captured on your smartphone, but quickly and easily add a sound snippet, or in this instance a short qwip, to go along with it. Imagine you’re on vacation at the beach and you want to send a quick snapshot to your family and friends at home — well you can, and with a short message saying how much you wish they were there and capturing the rolling of the waves in the background. It’s easier and faster to capture and share than a video, but it makes the message that much more special and personal, and a lot more human than a static image.
For brands and marketers, QWiPS allows them to capture that same “humanization” and personal connection, and it adds another layer to social media interactions and conversations. QWiPS’ debut at Fashion’s Night Out is the perfect example. Fashion editors and bloggers who used a beta version of QWiPS were able to take their tweets, pictures and posts from the parties, fashion shows and other events of the night, and bring them to life with the emotion, personality and authenticity of a spoken anecdote or some humor. For consumers and fans worldwide who couldn’t make it to the event, they could feel the excitement of the evening and hear editors, celebrities and designers speaking directly to them even while they stayed at home.

Adriana Gascoigne

We’re excited to share one of our favorite new iPhone apps, Kinetik, which allows app enthusiasts to rate, review, recommend and share their favorite iPhone apps with friends. We’re now living in a “there’s an app for that,” uber-saturated app society, so to filter through the noise, Kinetik will enable users to socially discover and forward on the apps that seem the most interesting to them. Imagine a designer sharing the most gorgeous apps, a chef sharing the best cooking apps, a game developer sharing the most mind blowing games, a tennis fan sharing an app of her favorite tournament.

Available in the iTunes App Store TODAY under the Social Networking category for free.

App Store Link: www.bit.ly/kinetik

How it works

To share an app, you simply fire up Kinetik, choose an app, add a short comment and share it across social networks like Twitter and Facebook. Kinetik also lets you follow friends to see recent apps your friends are sharing, organizes the popular apps within your friends and allows you to browse them by categories like Games, Music and Photography.

Kinetik’s people section shows you who to follow based on the apps you have in common. You also have a Kinetik profile to let your friends know what apps you are using.

More than 15 billion apps have been downloaded to date, and more than 425,000 apps are available to the 200 million iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® users worldwide.

5 Apps That Every HTC EVO Owner Should Have

November 24th, 2010
All Chapters, Los Angeles
profile picture

Dimple Thakkar

Anyone that is a “gadget-freak” like me knows that the HTC EVO is one of the most talked about smart phones of 2011.

Finally, a touchscreen phone I am proud to call the iPhone killer. That’s right, I said it (and I’ve waited so long for this moment too!).

The EVO comes with 7 home screens, an 8 megapixel camera, HDMI output, live video sharing with a front-facing camera, visual voicemail, a kickstand for hands-free and tabletop viewing, 4.3 inch screen, 4G speeds, and so much more.

But what really makes the user-experience that much better are the apps!

With that said, here are my top 5 favorite apps for the HTC EVO.

1. Tasker

This app automates your entire phone! Here are some things you can do: launch a music application when you plug in your headphones, send an automated text to someone when you’re 15 minutes away from picking them up, or set a schedule to disable certain features on your phone to conserve battery power at night.

For more info:
http://tasker.dinglisch.net

2. CamCard

For those of you who do a lot of IRL networking, this app is for you! Whenever someone gives you a business card, simply take a photograph of it with CamCard. The app scans and detects the information on the card and adds it to your phone’s address book.

For more info:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-intsig-bizcardreader-ptBx.aspx

3. Vlingo

For a safer and less distracting driving experience, use Vlingo. Use voice commands to operate your phone. Compose text messages and emails. Use Vlingo to read incoming messages (email and SMS) while driving or get directions while keeping your hands on the wheel.

For more info:
http://www.vlingo.com

4. Lookout

People often forget that a smart phone’s operating system needs anti-virus and security just like our PCs do. Use this app to stop viruses, malware, and spyware. The Lookout app also provides a backup solution so all of your data can be safe in the cloud. And finally, Lookout will help you find your phone when stolen or misplaced by pinpointing it on a Google Map. You can activate a loud alarm to locate your phone when it’s nearby…even if it is in silent mode.

For more info:
http://www.mylookout.com/m/android

5. Caller ID Faker

For us Girls in Tech that just wanna have fun, Caller ID Faker is a must-have app. Use this app to make crank calls from any phone number, change your voice, and record the call so you can proudly review your work and share it with your friends.

For more info:

6. AND A BONUS FOR YOU SUPER GEEKS!!!

This isn’t an app, but I thought I’d mention this item on Amazon.com for serious EVO users that may want TWO extra longer life batteries and a wall travel dock + USB charger on the cheap! Never plug your phone in to charge again.

Competitive, Social & Loyal: A Look at Women and Modern Gaming and App’ing

Christine Oneto

In a recent study by Q Interactive, it was found that women are both loyal to those social media apps and games they play (think: Farmville or (Lil) GreenPicture 4Patches & other Causes) and competitive, as their interest in gaining virtual currency shows.  According to Q Interactive, “The study of U.S. women, of whom 50 percent play online games according to Pew Internet, sought to offer a clearer picture into this growing group and where brands do and can fit in.”

Here are some statistics:

  • 85 percent of those surveyed use five or fewer games and/or apps regularly, indicating an inclination to be loyal to a handful of favorites; approximately 15 % regularly invest in six or more games/apps at a time
  • More than half (57 %) are earning/spending virtual currency daily
  • 95 percent utilize virtual currency primarily to “gift” and/or advance games
  • For more statistics and to see the way Q Interactive studied how brands and women intersect during social media gaming and app’ing,  finding brands to be an important partner- please see their article at:

    Happy gaming & app’ing!

Microsoft vs. Apple: The Double Standard of Expectations

    September 1st, 2009
    Girls In Tech

    Lucy Li

I am a PC. I am happy with my Thinkpad. Yes, there are service packages that I need to install, but I look at it as par for the course. I understand the complaints others have regarding their Windows machine. I appreciate the Mac commercial (though I do have more sympathy for the PC character, since I think the Mac character is way to smug…) I am happy with my Windows machine (or I am not cool enough for a Mac).apple-pc-ads

I have an iPod Touch. I use it mostly for the apps and enjoy trying out different ones. However, I have been reluctant to download more recently. Why? Well, it seems like every time I want to try something new, I discover that I need to upgrade the software on my iPod.

This was my recent experience trying to download a new app. I needed the new iPhone/iPod software. Okay, I synced it with my computer in order to upgrade. Oh, we can’t upgrade it yet, my iTunes software needed to be upgraded. Okay – downloaded the new version of iTunes. By the way, it came with Quicktime, Bonjour, and MobileMe, that Apple thinks I will need (I uninstalled some of them last time I upgraded). Okay… (The download and install took a while.) Afterwards, I needed to reboot my computer. By the way, my previously made shortcut didn’t work anymore. Okay, I needed to make a new shortcut. Hmm, why did it take over 30 seconds to load the new iTunes? Finally, I was able to upgrade the software for the iPod. It costed $9.95! Sigh!

I was told that the $9.95 thing is not Apple’s fault – it is GAAP related. Those silly accounting rules… But the whole process for me wanting to try out a new app took FOREVER. Yes, it was a one time thing, but there were incremental upgrades that I had to do in the past. The upgrade process is not the most simple, the syncing and the dual downloading / installing. It happened more frequently that I like for a portable music player. Yet, there are no major complaints from Apple users. Why is that?

I get the sense that Apple can’t do no wrong, whereas everything Microsoft does is evil. Maybe I am not seeing the Apple complainers. Still, Apple is a huge company making money off of us. Even Google has been getting some flack after getting “too big”. Why does the public seem to have this double standards with Microsoft and Apple?

Please checkout GIT Silicon Valley launch event on Thrusday, 9/10.
