How ‘Girls In Tech Indonesia’ is Aiming to Engage and Inspire

Posted July 28, 2011 by Muhammad Ilman Akbar

The photo on the right shows a #StartupLokal community meet-up last month. Many people usually attend, your correspondent included, this kind of networking event/meet up. Count the number of women in that photo. How many of them can you see?

Yes, that’s the problem – it’s far from being a fair balance of genders. We’re not sexist, but this is an unfortunate fact. From developers, start-up founders, and CEOs, to investors & VCs; from informal meet-ups to technology-related conferences – the majority of people we meet are men. Where are the women in this industry?

Foursquare’s Future: Predictive Check-Ins, Recommendations

Posted April 21, 2011 by Josh Wolford

Foursquare should be excited about its current success in the check-in sphere. Not only did they recently surpass 8 million users, but 4sq day on April 16th was an enormous hit, shattering records for check-ins on a single day and creating tremendous buzz by having major cities declare the day official.

Speaking at the Girls in Tech event in San Francisco, CEO Dennis Crowley talked about the future of Foursquare, and what he sees on the horizon for improving the way people check-in.

This Week in Goal Setting: Foursquare Aspires to Be “Clippy in Your Pocket”

Posted April 20, 2011 by Liz Gannes

The next version of Foursquare is about making check-ins “faster and lighter,” said CEO Dennis Crowley in an on-stage interview with me last night for Girls in Tech in San Francisco. Crowley called his company’s current apps “clunky and heavy,” and said he is testing new versions that will be out later this quarter that should reduce the time it takes to check in from something like 20 seconds to five seconds.

Foursquare’s Dennis Crowley Talks Roadmap, Clippy, Future of Location

Posted April 20, 2011 by Tomio Geron

Will Foursquare be the new Clippy? Dennis Crowley, chief executive of the hot location-based service Foursquare, talked about plans for the company and his vision of location-based services at an event organized by Girls In Tech in San Francisco Tuesday night.

Most interestingly, Crowley says expects Foursquare in the future to be more automated, to make it much more quick and simple to check-in, with more notifications and less “checking-in”–at least in the way we think about checking-in to the app now.

From Check-Ins To Recommendations: A Glimpse Into The Future of Foursquare

Posted April 20, 2011 by Rip Empson

Today, at the Where 2.0 Conference in Santa Clara, man-about-town Robert Scoble spoke with Foursquare Co-founder Dennis Crowley about future plans for the hot location-based service. According to Crowley, the future of Foursquare is going to focus squarely on what its users are going to do, not what they are doing. See what I did there? It’s all well and good to track the realtime movements of its more than 8 million users, but the startup wants to make use of the loads of data it’s collected on these realtime movements (600 million check-ins in the last year) to help users plan what they should do next.

Zuckerberg Discusses Passion for Innovation with Senator Hatch On Stage at BYU

Posted March 26, 2011 by Josh Constine

Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg spoke to an audience of over 10,000 at Brigham Young University last night. The conversation, moderated by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), chair of the U.S. Senate Republican High-Tech Task Force, focused on why passion for one’s product is the defining characteristic of successful entrepreneurs.

The discussion, as Search Engine Land covers, also touched on Facebook’s potential for driving empathy and world peace, and the continuing shift towards openness in the privacy norms of the internet community.

Would I attend my own conference? Why conferences need more diversity.

Posted March 24, 2011 by Sarah Milstein

When you’re deciding whether to attend a conference, and you’re checking out the website, what do you consider? Most likely, you’ll look at the program, searching for names you know and session titles that describe compelling topics.

If you’re like me—some of you are and some of you aren’t—you’ll also look for diversity among the speakers. If every speaker is a man, or if everyone is white, or both, I know this isn’t an event for me. I don’t need to hear more of the same prominent voices, and I don’t get much value out of an environment that takes a narrow, old-school view on who’s worth listening to.

ER Accelerator, NYC’s newest startup incubator launches

Posted March 24, 2011 by Courtney Boyd Myers

In 2010, New York City took the world by surprise, unleashing a flood of start-ups and funding power, giving Silicon Valley a run for its money, literally. There are several big startups to watch in New York City this year, like GroupMe, Of A Kind, Meetup, Tumblr, Foursquare and VYou, but the smaller “barely legal” startups are the future of this industry, and as we all know, the future is approaching with lightning speed.

Female Entrepreneurs Hit Glass Ceiling for VC Funding

Posted March 23, 2011 by Nonny de la Pena

Journalism is dead!

Long live journalism!

And so it goes as we continue on through the process of Schumpeter’s gale of creative destruction. With pay walls that come and go and come again (or hacked with four lines of code) and linkbacks ever so briefly taking it on the chin, how is it that we continue to misunderstand the business of the news? We’ve got to get long past the “what, me tweet?” debate and must move on to a diversity of news-telling technologies that serve communities across the globe.

Thoughts on Girls in Tech’s Social Media Panel

Posted February 8, 2011 by Athena Von Oech

I just got back from Girls in Tech’s Social Media Week panel on social media. Panelists included Cathy Brooks, Shaherose Charania, Christine Herron, and Jory Des Jardins. Liz Gannes did a great job moderating the panel, especially as a last minute replacement for Kara Swisher.

The topic for this panel originally was inspired by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s inspiring TEDWomen talk, which I had heard about but not seen it until today. Go watch it, now. We’ll wait. Amazing, right?

US-China business ties seen as built on mutual collaboration

Posted December 14, 2010 by Michael Krebs

The business and investment communities of both China and the United States have been working for years to strengthen ties – and the answer to those closer ties may be found in change and collaborative innovation.

American and Chinese business leaders and investors have been seeking better transactional relationships for decades – as both societies offer very desirable markets in manufacturing, technology, infrastructure, financial, healthcare and consumer applications – but there have been ideological differences between the two nations that have created obstacles with regard to the implementation many of these endeavors. It is likely that these obstacles may be overcome, but they need to be better understood.

Studio Behind Facebook Movie Woos Techies

Posted September 29, 2010 by Jenna Wortham

You would expect to find software developers and Internet dwellers lining up for a movie like “Inception” or the latest “Star Trek.” But will they clamor to see a big-screen drama about software developers and Internet dwellers?

The answer to that question will come on Friday with the wide release of “The Social Network,” a dramatic reimagining of the origins of Facebook.

One challenge in marketing the film was convincing a technologically sophisticated crowd that a movie about a social networking site, the Internet and building a start-up could be captivating enough to fill two hours, said Scott Rudin, one of the producers of “The Social Network” at Sony Pictures.

“Some people in the tech community were very skeptical about a Facebook movie,” he said. “They were wondering whether it would be a version of ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ but with friend requests.”

To counter that, the studio worked with technology blogs like Mashable and organizations like Girls in Tech to set up advance screenings around the country, Mr. Rudin said.

Silicon Valley’s Girls in Tech network to make its mark in France

Posted May 21, 2010 by Roxanne Varza

Thankfully, it seems that the days of the male-dominated tech scene are behind us. Leading ladies like Google’s Marissa Mayer, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and even Yahoo’s Carol Bartz are a few names that often make the spotlight and somewhat balance the scorecard. And in France, the spotlight perhaps doesn’t get any brighter than that of the Minister of Digital Economy, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet. So it’s hardly surprising that numerous groups are popping up to support and encourage women in entrepreneurship, innovation and technology – including Silicon Valley-based Girls in Tech, which will make its debut in Paris at the end of the month.

The Girls in Tech network was founded in San Francisco in 2007 by Adriana Gascoigne, who is currently the VP of Marketing for SecondMarket. Girls in Tech strives to encourage and promote the advancement of women in entrepreneurship, innovation and technology through various networking events and functions. With over 7,000 current members, the group has local branches in a number of foreign countries including Greece, India, China, the UAE and now France – which is the second European country to be part of the network after Greece. Looks like Girls in Tech is turning out to be a real global movement!

Fixing Silicon Valley’s Gender Gap One Pitch At A Time

Posted April 22, 2010 by Evelyn Rusli

Crystal Yan, a senior at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, was actively involved in student business organizations and case study competitions, but she never considered a computer science course, much less a career in programming– until she enrolled in the Technovation Challenge— a program that introduces girls to tech entrepreneurship. “I saw this as an intersection of a world that I knew [business] and technology, it was a chance to learn about the other side.”

The Technovation Challenge is the Bay area chapter of Iridescent (a non-profit education group that links mentors to students) in partnership with Girls in Tech. Over the course of an eight week program, 45 high school girls and 25 mentors worked in teams to create an Android app from scratch and build out a marketing plan. The program culiminates in “Pitch Night,” an event held this evening at the Microsoft campus in Mountain View. The teams presented their apps and business plans to a panel of business leaders, consisting of Katherine Barr of Mohr Davidow Ventures, Mendel Rosenblum co-founder of VMWare and Adeo Ressi of The Funded. It’s a small program with grand ambitions: to close the huge divide between women and men in Silicon Valley.

Out of the Loop in Silicon Valley

Posted April 17, 2010 by Claire Caine Miller

CANDACE FLEMING’S résumé boasts a double major in industrial engineering and English from Stanford, an M.B.A. from Harvard, a management position at Hewlett-Packard and experience as president of a small software company.

But when she was raising money for Crimson Hexagon, a start-up company she co-founded in 2007, she recalls one venture capitalist telling her that it didn’t matter that she didn’t have business cards, because all they would say was “Mom.”

Another potential backer invited her for a weekend yachting excursion by showing her a picture of himself on the boat — without clothes. When a third financier discovered that her husband was also a biking enthusiast, she says, he spent more time asking if riding affected her husband’s reproductive capabilities than he did focusing on her business plan.

No Men Allowed: Girls In Tech Expands To New York, LA, And Beyond

Posted December 4, 2008 By Tom Foremski

“Women in the work place are very competitive with each other and that makes the glass ceiling twice as thick,” says Adriana Gascoigne. She is the founder of Girls in Tech, a 1300 strong organization that seeks to empower women in the technology industry.

Tech companies continue to be heavily male dominated and that’s something that Girls in Tech hopes to change through networking, roundtables, and entrepreneurial workshops. And only women are invited…

The Scoop: Web 2.0 Expo NY & BlogWorld Expo

Posted Tuesday, 23 September 2008 11:21, Written by Guest Writer

Hey peeps! Sarah Carr here taking a few lines of TechZulu’s blog to give a quick recap of Web 2.0 Expo NYC and BlogWorld Expo Vegas that took place this last week(end). For those of you who aren’t familiar with me, I just wanna say – WTF?! No, no but really I’m super stoked to be guest blogging here for TechZulu and hope you find my blogs not only entertaining but informative. Because if not, I don’t think Efren will invite me back…so here goes nothing.

Web 2.0 Expo NYC was great! The Javits Center was, of course, amazing and well, HUGE. This was my first O’Reilly conference and it didn’t fall below my highest expectations. The vendors included big dogs like SalesForce.com, IBM, Microsoft, HP, Sun microsystems, the list goes on. My favorite vendors are the ones who may be a bit smaller but are still doing amazing things (especially open source companies) – Brickfish, Kablink, Girls in Tech, LiquidPlanner, the list goes on as well. Mindtouch exhibited with SnapLogic this year to promote our recent partnership and product launch of Deki for CRM – check out our press release for more info.

Just An Online Minute… Girls! Girls! Girls! In Tech

Girls in Tech Launch, The Cutting Room, New York
September 17, 2008

Ok, ok, I’ll keep the sorority nudges and estrogen level references to a minimum. I mean, isn’t this what we women have fought against since the 1800s? Aren’t we at a place where a huge group of women won’t get the “chattering,” “gaggle,” “henhouse” grammar treatment? Come on; don’t take yourself so seriously. I don’t. Especially if I’m at an event for “Girls in Tech” where the sign is pink and the dudes were sparse. Well, this wasn’t called Dudes in Tech now, was it?

I walked in and filled out my lovely nametag and immediately saw my pal and party wrangler, Matt Caldecutt, emerging through the pond of women like Sasquatch lumbering through the Mantua, Ohio marshes. It doesn’t take a master of espionage to deduce that Nichelle Stephens would be nearby.

My +1 was the always lovely and currently alcohol-abstaining Gail Hilton, Director of Sales and Marketing for Qwikker, and Rebecca Reyes, Internal communications specialist, IBM, my old employer and tech-savvy giant. Both women are good people. That’s right, I said women, not girls.

Social Studies In New York

In my continued effort to be social, I would like to invite any and all in the New York area to a few events. Tomorrow I will be giving a toast at the Girls in Tech New York Launch Party. I attended the launch party for this group last year in San Francisco and I am honored that I was asked to speak briefly at the New York launch tomorrow. I have no idea what I am going to say yet but hopefully I will come up with something witty and inspiring to fill my allotted three minutes by tomorrow night.

Hard out there for a chick: Girls in Tech starts L.A. chapter

6:00 AM, July 18, 2008

If you polled tech companies in Los Angeles to see if they employed more men or women, it’s easy to guess what they’d say: For reasons that perhaps only former Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers can explain, men dominate tech.

But to paraphrase Jon Stewart, it just got a little easier out there for a chick. Thursday night, as SoCal techies partied the night away at the Twiistup event at the Viceroy in Santa Monica, Adriana Gascoigne (pictured) launched a Los Angeles chapter of Girls in Tech, the organization she founded last year with two other female consultants in the tech industry…..
