Manifesto for Change

Building software is messy. It is highly complex, difficult to predict, and is wraught with pitfalls and challenges. Software projects are known for underdelivering to the needs of the customer, missing deadlines, and coming in way over budget.

In the “old” days of software development, we embraced lengthy documentation and formalized process which was supposed to alleviate unknowns, isolate risk, and produce better software. But even with the best planning, our projects would fail.

What we found over time is that the software you build is really only as good as your understanding of what the customer needs on a project. And your ability to adapt and change to your customer’s changing business needs and requirements are key to your success.

So in software development, we employ “agile” strategies for managing changing customer needs. In general, these strategies help us embrace change and build better, more successful software for our customers.

But as it is with life, embracing change is often easier said than done. Growing pains are inevitable any time we are challenged or pushed in a way that forces us to adapt. Ultimately our success in life and in our work depends on our ability to be agile; to think fast and make improvements along the way. Yet everything in us fights change every step of the way.

Personally, I’m feeling some of these pains at the moment and finding myself longingly looking back to the times when everything was more concrete and defined. In software development, we have an “Agile Manifesto” which helps guide us:

We value:

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan

Upon reflecting on the Agile Manifesto, it made me think that we could really all use a similar manifesto for guiding our lives and helping us embrace that inevitable change. In life or in business, change is coming. What is your manifesto?

Here’s mine:

I value:

Meaningful and impactful progress over completed action items and to do lists
Facing issues and conflicts head on over being comfortable and avoiding conflict
Challenging myself to work outside of my comfort zone over doing work that I’m naturally great at
Detaching from the outcome over feeling bound to a specific plan or outcome

Computer Engineer Barbie?

Computer Engineer BarbieI have to admit that when I first heard about the newest Barbie®, the “Computer Engineer Barbie”, I had to resist from groaning a little. But when I looked a little futher into it and found out about the great new “I Can Be…™” Barbie® doll promotion, I quickly became a fan.

The “I Can Be…™”  Barbie® dolls are a special promotion/movement to inspire girls to try new careers.

According to the website:

We believe that when you add women and girls, you change everything. We are leaders and dreamers. We are the future. And, we want help making positive change – for ourselves and the world around us.

Barbie® I Can Be…™ dolls and accessories empower girls to play out different roles and “try on” fabulous careers, including computer engineer, the first Barbie® profession chosen by popular vote! Always a reflection of the times, this digital diva engineers the perfect geek-chic look, with hot pink accessories and sleek gadgets to match. The inspiring set also comes with a special code that unlocks career-themed content online, for even more digital play (how fitting)!

The newest “News Anchor” and “Computer Engineer” Barbie® dolls were inspired by and created based on votes received from girls and women on the site early this year. Not only are these dolls encouraging young women to dream ”to be”, they are igniting a national movement to inspire girls. On April 22nd, they are asking The Obama Administration to create a “Take our Daughters & Sons to Work Day”. Click here to sign the declaration.

While personally, I’m a little conflicted by the diva-style ultra pink ”Computer Engineer” Barbie image, I have to give Matel™ a big hand for helping us spread the word and show young girls about the possibilities of working in our field.

What do you think? Do you think that the Computer Engineer Barbie will help young girls “dream” about a career in technology?

Girls in Tech Boise Lunch & Learns

Girls in Tech Boise Lunch & Learns

The Boise, Idaho chapter of Girls in Tech  is excited to announce a new local mentorship program called “Lunch & Learns”.

Lunch & Learns are an opportunity for Girls in Tech members to share their experiences working in technology with area High School female students over pizza during their lunch hour.

The program is designed to give women a forum to share their stories of working in the industry with impressionable young women.  The goal of the program is to demonstrate to these girls that incredible career opportunities that await them.  Additionally, girls are able to see real-world examples of women working in the industry and can break through some of the tradionally “geek” stereotypes that often keep them from pursuing rewarding careers in tech.
Speakers tell students about how they got started in the field, what challenges they have encountered along the way, and what excites them about working with tech.  There is a chance to display and present real projects they are working on and discuss the ins and outs of working in the field.
Lunch & Learns are an excellent opportunity to volunteer in the community and mentor up-and-coming technologists.  Young women are given the chance to ask questions and learn more about what it is really like to have a career in technology.
To find out more about the program and/or partnering with a local school in your area, please contact candace@girlsintech.net.

Girls in Tech Boise is Launched!

The official Boise Idaho Girls in Tech event was a fantastic success! There were around 17 ladies in attendance and the enthusiasm was amazing.

Although Boise has a relatively smaller population than many of the other Girls in Tech chapters, the area is booming with a vibrant and powerful tech community. And we couldn’t ask for a more innovative and inspiring group of girls than those in attendance at the inaugural Boise GIT event!

The group left feeling more connected and energized about their careers in technology. Girls in Tech Boise has a heartfelt mission to mentor high school and college aged up and coming technologists. I can’t wait to see the great influence and change the Boise Girls in Tech chapter is going to affect for the Treasure Valley area.

“Hello World” – From the City of Trees

Did you know that one of the most vibrant and growing tech scenes is located in Boise, Idaho? According to the Idaho Department of Commerce, the area has more than 350 software and information-technology companies. Although not a large metropolitan city, the local tech community in Boise is thriving. Big tech companies like Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, and Micron have offices here and the area is booming with tech entrepreneurs and start ups. Boise is often featured as one of the best places to live, work, do business, raise a family and has fabulous outdoor recreation activities such as skiing, hiking, biking, rafting, fishing, and more.

Next month Boise will launch a brand new chapter of Girls in Tech! We’re so excited to have Girls in Tech representation in the City of Trees and can’t wait to provide a strong community for all women in the Boise tech industry. It can be challenging to find like-minded women to collaborate with in large cities much less smaller places such as Boise. We hope to provide a community where the girl techie’s of Boise can unite and collaborate!

Launch details coming soon…
