Fashion Blogs: List Of The Best Fashion Show Coverage On the Web

Mollie Vandor

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – fashion week. And, from fashion blogs to the New York Times , everyone’s talking about all the sensational styles currently making their way down the runways of Lincoln Center. Of course, not everyone has a front row seat for all that fabulous fashion.

Fortunately, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you don’t need a ticket to check out the latest trends on the runway. All you have to do is turn on your computer. Which is way easier than navigating the steps of Lincoln Center in your stilettos anyway.

Speaking of navigating, I’ve rounded up the best sites for finding fashion coverage on the web in this handy guide – How To: Find Fashion Show Videos & Fashion Show Pics Online. It’s full of the best places to find fashion show videos, behind the scenes coverage of fashion week, runway show reviews and more.

And the best part? These resources will last well beyond the trends they’re covering, so you can keep checking back for fresh fashion coverage during the rest of this season and beyond. Because the best fashion statement is the one that’s always in style. Well, that and pretty much anything by Chanel.

To see more fabulous lists, check out Ranker – home of the best lists on the web (if I do say so myself).

Fashion’s Night Out at Saks Fifth Avenue: Oh What a Night!

All the tech stars were aligned for the rock star themed Fashion’s Night Out, which was graciously produced by Hillary Gadsby of A Gadsby Affair, and hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills.  In case you didn’t hear the pre-event buzz, Fashion’s Night Out is a global initiative created by Anna Wintour of Vogue to celebrate the world of fashion.  And, let’s face it, it’s a good excuse to buy that coveted pair of shoes or the must have bag of the fall season.

The Girls in Tech enjoyed our signature GITini’s and snacked on hors d’ oeuvres and cupcakes by Frosted Cupcakery in our private VIP lounge.  Mingle Media TV covered the event and we will be posting interviews with shortly of some of our tech divas.  Other highlights of the evening included hair done by Blow LA, rock star makeovers, and let’s not forget a generous 15% off throughout the store, with 5% of proceeds going to our featured charity, Dress for Success.

Ladies shopped, mingled, and danced to a live DJ on every floor.  I even bought a fabulous new pair of Elizabeth & James heels, hey it was for charity!  This was one of our best events to date and we hope you will come next year to celebrate a night of fashion, technology and community.

Girls in Tech featured in National Journal, Joining Facebook for Developers’ Garage

September 10th, 2010

Girls in Tech, along with Facebook, was highlighted today in the National Journal as they will be hosting the upcoming Developers’ Garage Hackathon, this Saturday through Sunday.  Taking place at Facebook’s headquarters, it is a chance for “developers to code throughout the night and come up with new ideas and concepts.”  There will also be a “Women in Tech” influencers’ panel on Facebook Live, 5PM Eastern Time, on Saturday.

This article also mentions the event being brought to mind as it was announced in a letter to Congress on Thursday which Facebook sent in order to emphasize the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and its necessity to come to the forefront.   At present, our Congressional representatives are awaiting the passage by the Senate of the America COMPETES Act, which is a measure that would fund a wide variety of science and technology research projects.  Facebook’s announcement of their stance and sponsorship of this event hopes to spur on this legislation.

It is our hope that this event will do just that! — And with the brilliant minds getting together for this marathon hacking session, we feel it should have a great opportunity for doing so.

Read more here.

Taking Productivity to Another Level

September 6th, 2010
Girls In Tech

Terra Khachooni

A new book was released this month called “The Custom Fit Workplace: Choose When, Where, and How to Work and Boost Your Bottom Line” has business owners thinking about employees and mothers in a new way. As Google and other startups paved the way to build happy work environments, the notion of being a “great place to work” has become a goal for many companies. Although the start up world has added pin ball machines, bean bags, bright colors, and martini Mondays, larger corporations are applying the concept in more applicable ways. Some companies like Yahoo, offer a shuttle bus that will pick you up from San Francisco and bring you directly to the Yahoo campus. Many other companies offer cafeterias with high quality, healthy food as well as recreation areas for exercise such as basketball and volleyball courts, gyms, and even provide bikes to get from one part of the complex to another. For the younger crowd, this may seem like an obvious ROI for employers to have healthy, happy employees, but it was wasn’t too long ago any of these efforts ever existed.

Going a step beyond having ergonomically correct chairs, organizations like MomsRising.org* (2010, Forbes.com named MomsRising’s web site as one of the “Top 100 Websites For Women.”) is pressing upon companies to incorporate more flexible work situations for mothers. This is a 24/7 work culture and leaving the office doesn’t necessarily mean leaving work. The question still haunts most of us; will we be good parents or successful businesswomen? Men and women are under pressure to balance work and life commitments: being a good husband/wife, raising children, caring for aging parents, or just trying to find time to take care of themselves. In many places, it is difficult to imagine going form dual income to single income and even more daunting the thought that if you leave your job, you will most assuredly be replaced or left with whatever role is waiting for you.

“The Custom-Fit Workplace” has important and far-reaching implications for the way we work and improving not only people’s lives but companies’ bottom lines. This research-based book presents flexible work tactics including work-from-home arrangements, results-only work environments, babies-at-work programs, and successful career lane changes, among others. Perhaps surprisingly, Jet Blue, Ernst & Young, Best Buy and the University of California are among the companies that have already positioned mother and family flexible policies, which are detailed in this book.  A TIME Magazine article called “Brining Babies to Work” may have been the inspiration of Joan Blades and Nanette Fondas, founders of MomsRising and authors of “The Custom Fit Workplace”. It not only showed that babies are not any more of a distraction than the water cooler conversations or Fantasy Football, they have also shown to boost morale. “We have tended to have this myth of the separation between work and family,” Secret says. “In reality, that never existed.” Read More
