Esther Dyson: Thinking Large

August 30th, 2010
All Chapters, San Francisco

We live in the world where women entrepreneurs are exposed to many opportunities to create, launch, and develop their businesses. On November 18, 2010 in San Francisco, there will be held the first Amplify Business Pitch Competition to Award women-led start-ups. Vator.tv, a social network for entrepreneurs in a partnership with Girls in Tech, a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of intelligent women in technology, will host the event.

The keynote speaker is Esther Dyson, a journalist, an entrepreneur, an investor, and a philanthropist. She is also an active member of advisory boards for-profit and non-profit organizations. She was named by Forbes magazine as one of the most powerful women in American business.

Esther Dyson was born in Switzerland to a family of a mother mathematician and a father physicist. She always had a passion for technology. Dyson has a degree in economics from Harvard. She started her career as a fact checker, and later a reporter at Forbes magazine. However, she was always seeking challenges and was deeply interested in start-ups. In 1983 she joined Rosen Research and bought the company from her employer Ben Rosen. She renamed it EDventure Holdings. This was later sold to CNET Network. By selling EDventure Holdings to CNET Networks in 2004, Dyson broadened her new business opportunities.

Now her record of involvement includes multiple areas: health care, private aviation & space, and IT. She is an investor or sits on the board of companies like MeetUp Inc. (US), Midentity (UK), Flickr (US, sold to Yahoo!), del.icio.us (US, sold to Yahoo!), Evernote (US), Boxbe (US), 23andMe (US), Airship Ventures (US), Eventful.com (US), Sunlight Foundation (US). This is not the complete list of the companies that Esther Dyson is involved in.

Her vast interests and vision goes beyond the United States boarders. She sees opportunities in the emerging markets of Russia, Hungary and Belarus. She is currently investing in CVO Group (Hungary), Epam (Belarus), IBS Group (Russia, advisory board), Vatera (Hungary), and Yandex (Russia).

Despite her busy schedule she is an active journalist and a writer. She publishes one of the most intellectual articles on technology, the monthly newsletter Release 1.0. In 1997, Dyson published Release 2.0. A book on how the Internet affects individuals’ lives. Her other work includes Release 3.0, her bimonthly column for the New York Times. She has a weblog Release 4.0 and an occasional contributor to online Huffington Post as Release 0.9.

Dyson travels a great deal. She is lives without a telephone at home and prefers not to drive a car. She is a remarkable individual who thinks large and has a unique vision of the future.

I’m Going to Fashion’s Night Out Because I Want a Night to Remember!!

August 27th, 2010
All Chapters, Los Angeles

Dimple Thakkar

Unless you’re already a celebrity, how often do you get a chance to spend a Friday night walking across the red carpet on your way into a private VIP lounge to have a glass of bubbly?  Or discuss rock n’ roll inspired fashion with other influential women that come from a wide variety of industries?

My guess is not very often, which is exactly why coming to Fashion’s Night Out on September 10th in Beverly Hills, CA at Sak’s Fifth Avenue will be a night to remember (…or not to remember if you drink too much bubbly!).

As if the details above aren’t enough to make FNO a memorable night, there will also be opportunities for attendees to enjoy rock icon makeovers and receive backstage style tips from our resident fashionistas.  Further, you get 15% off any purchase and 5% of sales benefit Dress for Success, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing women with professional attire to thrive in work and life.

But wait…there’s more!  Spend $500 or more on Chloe merchandise and let their artist commemorate your new look with a one of a kind sketch in your new outfit.  The French fashion label offers luxurious style, accessories, fragrances, handbags, shoes, and more.

Why so much awesome in one night?

September 10th marks the first evening of New York Fashion Week, So, retailers across the world are celebrating by staying open late and hosting in-store events.  FNO was created to help retailers during a tough economy and encourage spending while connecting everything to a great cause.

So come out, splurge, and get pampered!  It’s the perfect opportunity to get your wardrobe and look ready for the fall and winter seasons.  And don’t worry, nobody leaves empty handed.  Every attendee will receive a swag bag, filled with freebies and goodies from our sponsors and promotional partners.

Recycle your gadgets for those in need…

August 25th, 2010
All Chapters

Alexandra Mokh

Are you one of the many out there who has some old electronics lying around? Perhaps an old gaming system you never use, an old flip phone covered in gems, or dare I say it, *gasp* an old beige desktop PC? For many households, these items become “outdated” rather quickly, and often stick around somewhere gathering dust, never to be used again. Today, with the help of many companies, you can recycle and donate your old gadgets. Some of these companies will clean up and resell the items, taking 100% of the profits and putting them into various charities, while others will actually refurbish the devices if possible, putting them in the hands of those in need, such as schools with little-to-no technology programs or budgets, to third world communities who really need the technology but can’t afford it.

So where can you go to donate your used tech toys? There are many resources, such as eBay’s Rethink Initiative / eBay Giving Works, which acts as a directory of resources for you to donate or recycle your gear. Others include Reconnect, a collaboration between Dell and Goodwill, that accepts items in any condition, and is as simple as dropping the items off to a local participating goodwill location. Check out the links at the bottom of this article for even more places to choose from.

Recycling or donating your gadgets is a great way to help others in need, and maybe even help clean up some more space around the house. Of course, for those wondering, there are often tax benefits and write-off’s as well if needed. Don’t forget, if donating pc’s, laptop’s, or cell phones, to be sure to delete and remove all personal or sensitive data from your device’s as well.

The next time you think to toss out that old ipod or personal dvd player, make sure to recycle or donate. You’ll save landfill space, and perhaps help someone less fortunate who could really use it.

I’m Going To Fashion’s Night Out. . .Because I Have Nothing To Wear

August 25th, 2010
Events, Los Angeles
profile picture

Mollie Vandor

We’ve all had those days. The days where you feel like no matter how many clothes are crammed into your closet, you still don’t own anything you actually want to get dressed in. Forget feeling fabulous. On days like that, it’s enough of an effort trying not to feel like a total fashion failure.  Which is, of course, the polar opposite of how fashion is supposed to make you feel.

Fashion is supposed to feel glamorous, exotic, inspiring. It’s supposed to take the everyday act of getting dressed and turn it into something bigger – the opportunity to outfit yourself in armor that expresses your personality and lets you take on the day with that special sort of swagger that only comes from feeling. .  .you guessed it – fabulous.

The fall 2010 fashion collections were about just that, featuring “conservative glamour, chic urban warriors, eccentric color combinations, and more” as Harper’s Bazaar put it.  In short, the prevailing theme for fall 2010 fashion seemed to be the powerful, professional woman, taking on her life – and her closet – one killer, creative look at a time.

It’s a theme that dovetails nicely with the upcoming Fashion’s Night Out event at Saks Fifth Avenue, presented by Girls in Tech LA. Five percent of proceeds from Saks’ sales that evening will go  to Dress For Success, “a non-profit organization that provides interview suits, confidence boosts, and career development to low-income women in over 75 cities worldwide.”  It’s truly an organization that helps women do good by helping them look and feel good. And it’s one we’re happy to help support.

The event itself will feature swag bugs stuffed with goodies, rock star makeovers, consults with stylists, cocktails and more.  Plus, there will also be giveaways from the brilliant fall collections by Elie Tahari and Pink Tartan.  Tahari’s travel-themed collection for fall was full of fur coats, casually elegant cardigans, military-inspired suiting and more. Pink Tartan also pulled together military-like precision and feminine details, creating a collection that was just the right balance of serious and sweet.

At Fashion’s Night Out, you can enter to win pieces from both designers on the fourth floor of the gorgeous Saks Fifth Avenue Beverly Hills, while also swigging cocktails, swapping style tips and supporting Dress For Success. Getting the chance to finally solve the ‘I have nothing to wear’ problem while raising money for a great cause and also enjoying everything Fashion’s Night Out has to offer? I can’t think of a better way to get yourself feeling fabulous for fall.
