New Media Continues to be Sticking Point for Hollywood

As a member of the Screen Actors Guild, I was relieved when the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) approved a tentative new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on April 19, 2009 as the SAG national board of directors voted 53.38%-46.62%   After the most recent Writers’ strike that shut down Hollywood, nobody in Los Angeles wants a strike, though many are still not happy with the terms for New media.

If you’re not an actor or writer in Hollywood, it is probably difficult for you to understand the importance of residuals, or payments made to the creator of performance art for subsequent screenings of the work, as the majority of members of the Screen Actors Guild or the Writers Guild take in middle-class incomes to support their families. As more of scripted content moves from regular TV/Cable viewing to the Internet with the powerhouse Hulu taking online viewing to the next level, it is not yet clear how performers will be compensated in the future.

Here are  few highlights of the new agreement:

- New media structure that tracks those achieved by other industry unions

-Jurisdiction on all derivative, made-for new media productions on all high-budget, original, made-for-new media productions plus on low-budget original, made-for-new media productions; plus on low-budget original new media productions that employ at least 1 covered performer

- Residuals for ad- supported streaming of feature films and television programs

24 days for first season or series

17 days for second and subsequent seasons for series

SAG mailed out ratification ballots on May 19 to vote on the theatrical agreement by June 9, 2009.  I just got my ballot in the mail, and with the union still divided, everyone in Tinseltown will be holding their breath.

Because let’s be real here, with the state of California and the Nation’s Economy, no one wants a strike.

Coworking: Because Working Alone Sucks!

When she’s not writing on The Redhead Said about geek stuff , including social media, usability and behavioral economics, Charlene spends her time appeasing her appetite for all knowledge, and making homemade marshmallows dipped in chocolate.

She makes her living helping people make their websites easier to use, editing books so that their ideas are crystal clear, and making marketing materials sound less markety. Wanna see stuff she’s done? Click on over to charlenejaszewski.com.

Traditionally, society forces us to choose between working at home for ourselves, or working at an office for a company. If we work at a traditional 9 to 5 job, we get community and structure, but lose freedom and the ability to control our own lives. If we work for ourselves at home, we gain independent but suffer loneliness and bad habits from not being surrounded by a work community.

Coworking is a solution to this problem…coworking provides the office of a traditional job, but in a very unique way.

- I’m Outta Here: How Coworking is Making the Office Obsolete.

NYC Co-working

The world of work is changing. While many of us are already freelancing, with the current economic climate, more of us are taking the opportunity to start new businesses and work on our own terms. But where are we working? Most of us think of two options: a home office (or, a corner of the kitchen table), or working at Starbucks. But there are more options available that you might not be aware of that offer more than just a space to lay your laptop. In the right environment, coworking provides collaboration, cooperation and inspiration.

Computer Games Major Now Offered at Universities

May 27th, 2009
All Chapters, San Francisco

College students no longer have to choose between playing video games and doing homework.  Now they can play video games and study at the same time!  George Mason University, the University of Florida and Carnegie Mellon have all started offering programs in computer game design.  The programs are created to train students in a curriculum that melds the left and right brain with classes in computer sciences as well visual and digital arts.

The creation of a computer games major speaks directly to the growing games industry that is increasingly about more than just fun.  In addition to console, mobile, and casual online games, there is a high demand for games in non-entertainment areas such as business management, medical and military training, education, and work-force training, to name only a few areas.

Girls in Tech recognizes the huge opportunity in the growth of games and we are kicking off our first games industry event this Thursday.  Join us at the San Francisco office of ngmoco as Girls in Tech Presents: The World of Casual and Social Games.  We have an amazing lineup of panelists from among the top players in the industry — Zynga, SGN, Mochi Media, and Super Rewards.

Space is limited, so sign up before tickets are sold out!  You can register here.

Event details:
Thursday, May 28, 2009
6:30pm Networking & wine
7:00pm Panel start
Location: ngmoco:) Office — 118 King St. 4th Floor, San Francisco, CA

An Inspiration: Sotomayor, First Hispanic Federal Appeals Judge Nominated

May 26th, 2009
All Chapters, DC

Adriana Gascoigne

At Girls in Tech we base a lot of our guiding principles on inspiration and motivation. As it is, the organization that has existed for over two years, grown to over 6,000 members and reached over 30 chapters globally, was created by an all-volunteer team – volunteers with the same passion, drive and vision to make the world a better place by encouraging women to take risks, venture through unchartered territory and achieve their dreams.0513sonia_article2

A wise person by the name of Kobi Yamada once said, “Intense desire not only creates its own possibilities, but its own talents. Don’t be afraid to do something just because it’s impossible.” I believe this to be true. Together we can change the world.

And that is why I’m writing today about the nomination of federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor – the first Hispanic justice on the Supreme Court. It gives me chills just to think about this. Born from Puerto Rican parents, Sotomayor grew up in the projects of a New York suburb. Defying all odds, she was able to rise above the trials and tribulations she encountered along the way and blossomed into a top-notch jurist with more credentials and experience on the bench than any of the current nine justices. President Obama clearly raved about her capabilities as having ”an understanding of how the world works and how ordinary people live.”

Today, President Obama made a great decision. Through minds and hearts like that of Sotomayor, we will be able to redefine the impossible and inspire girls and women representing any socio-economic bracket, race or religion to reach for the stars.

Santa Cruz’s Upcoming Meeting & Video from our ‘Fireside Chat’ w/ @Veronica

May 26th, 2009

Seana Norvell

A couple of weeks ago we had the lovely Veronica Belmont of Tekzilla and PlayStation Network’s Qore to Santa Cruz for a ‘Fireside Chat’.

We sat down with her to discuss how she found herself in broadcast, why she moved to Silicon Valley and which does she love more, gaming or consumer electronics.

Allan and Sun Lundell of Awake Media at NextSpace were generous enough to capture the chat on video, so we thought we would share it with you: click here.

The Santa Cruz Chapter’s next event will be a mixer at CAVA Wine Bar in Capitola on Wednesday, June 24th at 7 PM. We would like to take this opportunity to get feedback from our members and exchange ideas about what is coming up!!!

Hello From the GIT Seattle Chapter!

May 23rd, 2009
Seattle

Mary Jane

Hi from Seattle!

This is our very first blog post, and hopefully I’ll have some pictures to share soon.

I’m very excited about the enthusiasm of the women in our chapter and all the support from our friends and the community. We’re steadily growing. There are new people at every meeting, which I think is great.

I’m really impressed with the amount of talent and social consciousness we have in our chapter.  We have an awesome resume. I love how our diverse fields and skills are starting to form together into a big ball of imfluevement. (That’s involvement, influence, and improvement all mushed together.)

I can’t wait to see where we, as a chapter and an international organization, go.

Girls in Tech NYC Spring Mixer

The cold and dreary weather in New York has finally disappeared. The warm and sunny weather brings a sense of renewal and optimism, particularly important in the difficult economic times that we have experienced. Companies, too, are slowly starting to thaw from the deep freeze of the last several months and beginning to seek out talented individuals.

Girls in Tech NYC is fostering that spirit of renewal by hosting a co-ed TalentSeeker social at Kush lounge that will allow individuals to engage each other in a casual and relaxed environment. As a complement to the event we are featuring two motivational and powerful women within the NYC business community: Dina Kaplan, co-founder and COO of Blip.tv and Peg Samuel, CEO of Social Diva Media and author of How to be a Social Diva. Of course there will also be fabulous swag thanks to our generous sponsors: Beautiful Stranger.tv, Smashing Darling and SkinCeutials, who is providing a special giveaway!

This event has everything you need to network and engage in a chic and relaxing environment. All you have to bring is yourself, a friend and a business card!

LimeLife Launches “Apps For Good” Campaign

May 22nd, 2009
San Francisco
profile picture

Lucia Giacomantonio

hollywoodhangman-titleAs a big fan of Kiva.org, I wanted to share a great new campaign that LimeLife just launched called “Apps for Good”.  LimeLife, which is a women’s cross-platform digital media company, is contributing 10% of profits from its Hollywood Hangman iPhone game within a one-month period from May 21st to June 21st to Kiva.org.

Giving back to non-profits is so important and Kiva is a great organization because it gives women in developing countries the opportunity to achieve economic independence. By encouraging people to participate in Apps For Good, LimeLife will pave the way for people like Amavi Akoete, a Togoan 35 year-old mother of six to launch her jewelry-making business or Dulia Huanca, a Peruvian 23 year-old mother to launch her fruit stand.

If you’d like to participate in the Apps for Good Campaign, follow these steps:
1.)  Between today and June 21st, click on the following link to purchase and download Hollywood Hangman for your iPhone or iPod Touch:
http://itunes.com/apps/hollywoodhangman
2.)  You are encouraged to email, tweet, and update your social networking status to let your friends know how they can download Hollywood Hangman on their iPhone or iPod Touch
3.)  You can use the Facebook Connect feature within the game to ping your friends to join them in playing Hollywood Hangman to support Kiva
4.)  You can track the progress of LimeLife’s Apps for Good Campaign by following the LimeLife iPhone Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/LimeLifeiPhone
